We tackle challenges of an increasing computerized world. Our mission focuses on designing human-centred interfaces for interacting with the Internet of Things.
To this end, we focus on user-centred analysis, design, implementation and evaluation of modern human-computer interfaces such as Mixed Reality (Augmented and Virtual Reality) in combination with methods from computer graphics, information visualization, computer vision and machine learning.
Our industrial application domains encompass the whole product lifecycle from design to service, e.g. in the area of future mobility services.
Medical applications include therapy and rehabilitation of mental and physical deseases as well as well-being and health-promotion.
Consumer-oriented application domains are, amongst others, tourism, games or novel product-experiences.
Augmented Reality (AR) enables interaction with digital information in physical environments. This way, AR bridges a gap between the increasing number of sensor- and user-generated digital data and the real living environment of users.
Application domains of AR encompass, amongst others, remote assistance, telepresence, interactive training guides, novel user experiences in advertising, in-situ product design, Produktplanungen, variance analysis between planned production data and built structures, Fernwartung, as well as therapeutic and health-promoting activities.
Our services include potential analysis for your application domain, e.g., in industrial or medical domains, advertising or tourism. We consult you about the appropriate use of AR technologies such as dataglassses / head-mounted displays, 3D projectors, multi-display environments, AR software or 3D reconstruction of physical objects or environments.
Virtual Reality (VR) enables the immersion into computer-generated 3D worlds for interaction with remote or physically not existing environments.
Application domains of VR include, amongst others, remote presence using 360° videos, virtual training in challenging environments, as well as therapy of mental and physical diseases. The increasing number of affordable, consumer-oriented VR-solutions enables the cost-effective use of this technology also for small and medium enterprises.
Our services cover consulting about VRtechnologies such as data glasses / head-mounted displays, input devices, haptic feedback systems or 360° live-streaming. Furthermore, we offer the development of sophisticated VR applications, e.g., for virtual training, product design, remote assistance or medical therapies.
Informationvisualization facilitates the discovery of new information from abstract data. Augmented and virtual reality allow to boost information visualization methods by embedding them in large three-dimensional environments, e.g. using situated and immersive analytics. Through this knowledge workers can be efficiently supported in komplex processes.
Our services include the broad spectrum of computer graphics and informationvisualization with a foucs on AR and VR-related solutions. Specifically, our team conducts the requirement analysis, design and implementation of traditional and web-based computer graphics and informationvisualization systems as well as for 3D interactive visualization environments.
Computer Vision helps to drive us securely in (semi-)autonomous vehicles, to unlock our mobile devices with the need to touch them, or to detect tumors in medical imaging reliably. Machine learning for the data-driven prediction of events has become an integral part of almost every business application.
Our services encompass a broad spectrum of advanced computer vision and machine learning tasks. Specifically, our team has expertise in the areas of reality-capture (3D reconstruction), object detection, classification, regression as well as computer vision for human-computer interaction.
Smart thermostats, automatic parking assistants, smartphones and activity trackers are only a few examples for the increasing number of smart and connected devices that aim at supporting users in their daily lifes.
The full potential of new technology can only be reached, if it is developed with focus on the needs and abilities of users. Human-machine interaction aims at optimizing the joint performance of humans and technology in reaching the user's goals.
Our services cover the complete spectrum of iterative user-centred technology development. We support our customers with, e.g., usability analyses of soft- and hardwaresystems, user experience (UX) design, eye tracking, software, web and app development, consulting in domains such as multimodal interaction or internet of things (IoT) as well as transfer of technologies and knowledge.
Our laboratories for augmented and virtual reality as well as reality capture include a 35 square meter projection-based VR environment (CIVE - Coburg Intelligent Virtual Environment), various AR and VR headsets (e.g. Microsoft Hololens 2, Apple Vision Pro), 360° cameras, a Faro X330 Lidar system, a collaborative UR10e robot, and a photogrammetric full-body scanner for 3D reconstruction of people and objects. We offer 3D printers for rapid prototyping as well as electronics for rapid prototyping of smart objects.
Our optical outside-in tracking system (OptiTrack) with 23 PrimeX 22 cameras and 20 PrimeX 13 cameras allows motion capture of human performances for various application domains such as motion capture.
Furthermore, we offer eye tracking system for mobile use as well as for analysis in VR environments. We also offer to conduct controlled user studies under laboratory conditions.
In addition to the at NHR@FAU hosted HPC-resources for GPU and CPU-HPC-Computing (Alex and Fritz), we also have additional local HPC GPU nodes with Nvidia A100 and H100 cards.
